If we can discover what our dogs really like be that a game with a particular toy or a rather tasty treat then we can also use a technique called frustrative non-reward. This is where you can take a dog out on a walk or in the garden and then show the dog the reward, most dogs will then try to work out how to get the reward and may start to offer you certain actions like sitting by your side or laying down.

When this happens you need to choose what your criteria is and then reward the dog when they offer it. If the dog does not offer you the response you require then you just do not reward, the dog will become frustrated and try harder, working out what you want. This is very effective particularly if the dog is highly motivated by food or a toy.
